I have studied percussion for over twenty years with a broad repertoire that includes piano, hand bells, symphonic percussion, hand drums, trap set, and found instruments. I have played in multiple bands at venues all over Houston, but my most favorite gig was sitting in as a percussionist for jazz pianist and composer Elio Villafranca at Miller Outdoor Theater. I lead the bass drum line in an all-age drum and bugle corps for two years and currently play drums with two local bands: a punk folk group and a hardcore band that writes songs about vegetables and healthy living. I have been teaching music lessons and tutoring for several years, and I had the opportunity to write an original curriculum for HISD that teaches math through music and dance. This past summer, I volunteered as a counselor and drum instructor for Girls Rock Camp Houston, which was a truly life-changing endeavor. I view music education as an impetus for a lifetime of learning; that, and the fact that it's a whole lot of fun!
